Juicers play a major role of making juices. The good side with them is that they are of different types thus giving you a wide range of options. To guide you, here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of each type:

Centrifugal juicers

From their name, these are units that rely on the centrifugal force for them to extract juice. You have to push the fruits and vegetables down the feed tube and the foods are serrated by the rapidly spinning blades that are located at the bottom of the units.

In most cases the blades spin at 12,000 RPM. Once the vegetables and fruits are cut into small pieces the pulp is flung into the pulp extractor.

Advantages: it’s very easy to use thus you don’t require any special training to use them. Most of the high end models are large and effective enough such that you don’t have to undertake pre slicing. The units are also cheap and easy to clean.

Disadvantages: the main disadvantage is that the units tend to produce a lot of air and heat when spinning which often reduces the shelf life of the juice produced. They are also slightly noisy; therefore, if you don’t like noise you may find them irritating. The final disadvantage is that they don’t juice wheatgrass.

Masticating juicers

They are usually of two types: slow and twin-gear juicers. In most cases, the slow units run at speeds of between 70 and 160 RPM. The twin-gear units on the other hand are characterized by two stainless steel cylindrical rollers.

Slow units

Advantages: the slow nature of the units ensures that the juice produced has a long shelf life. For example, the juice produced can last for up to 48 hours. The units are also easy to clean and use. They are also able to easily produce high quality juice from wheatgrass.

Disadvantages: the juicers are usually expensive when compared to other units such as centrifugal juicers. They are also slow; therefore, not ideal for people who are in a hurry.

Twin-gear units

Advantages: since the fruits and vegetables are squeezed between rollers, the juice produced is usually of the highest quality. Since there is no air produced, the juice obtained can last for a long time. Just like the slow juicer, this unit can also produce juice from wheatgrass.

Disadvantages: the main disadvantage is that it’s expensive compared to other masticating units. It’s also slow and not good in producing juice from pineapple.
